DIY Simple Non-Toxic Foaming Hand Soap
Did you know that most hand soaps contain harmful ingredients? Triclosan is one chemical that use to be in hand soap. They have discovered that it causes cancer so most products have had this removed. Other harmful ingredients that can be in hand soaps include: sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, parabens, synthetic colors, synthetic fragrances, etc. These ingredients can cause skin irritation, organ system toxicity, endocrine disruption, allergenic effects, and potential other toxic harm.https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

“Triclosan causes cancer; it is commonly found in hand soaps”
On average, a person will wash their hands with soap at least 8-10 times a day (before/after eating, after using the restroom, cleaning, etc). That is a lot of exposure to harmful ingredients on a daily basis. With the concern of these toxic ingredients, I had to find a safer option for my family.
From talking with a friend who is an expert with essential oils, she shared a DIY (do-it-yourself) all-natural foaming hand soap. I have always loved foaming hand soap because I think the foam spreads through the surface of my hands quicker than non-foaming types. I really like this recipe because it is simple to make, affordable, and all-natural. Not only does the soap smell good, it also does a great job cleaning your hands effectively!
The ingredients include 100% pure essential oil(s) of choice, pure castile liquid soap, and water. When choosing a soap dispenser, I recommend choosing glass rather than plastic because pure essential oils over time can break down plastic which can leak chemicals into the soap. If you want the soap to be dispensed in foam, you will need to use soap dispensers that are made to form foam. I have made my own glass foaming dispensers and also have bought these stylish modern soap bottles.
To make your own glass foaming hand soap containers, you will need glass mason jars and foaming pumps. To create mine, I purchased $1.00 foaming hand soap from Dollar Tree. I took the pump out and thoroughly cleaned it to get rid of any (toxic) soap residue. You will need to cut the top of the pump from the soap bottle (where it is threaded). With the round part of the pump, trace a circle onto the lid of the mason jar. Using a sharp cutter, cut the circle out of the lid. Assemble the hand soap dispenser by placing the pump into the hole of the lid and screw on the ring to the jar. Wahla you now have a inexpensive, stylish foaming hand soap dispenser! Below are pictures of the process of creating your own soap dispensers.
- On the lid, trace around the round part of the pump. Using a sharp cutter, cut out the circle.
2. Screw the threaded top of the soap bottle onto the opening of the mason jar lid.
3. Screw on the foaming pump to the lid.
4. Put the pump/lid onto the mason jar and screw on the ring.
Once you have your soap dispenser, measure out unscented castile soap and funnel into your soap bottle. Next, add your favorite 100% pure essential oil(s). The combinations are endless! For the kitchen, I like to use lemon oil. For the bathroom soap I like Thieves (oil blend from Young Living), peppermint, lavender, or lime to name a few. Essential oils not only smell good but some even have antimicrobial properties. The castile soap itself is the cleaning factor of this soap but certain oils can add extra cleaning protection.
The next step is filling your soap dispenser with filtered water. I use filtered water from my kitchen sink. You can also purchase filtered water if you do not have access to filter water at home. Be careful not to fill the water completely to the top because when the pump is put in, the water will rise. Screw on the pump and lightly shake the soap mixture. To get the soap dispenser going, you may need to pump a few times.
Not only is this DIY soap all-natural and non-toxic, but it is also very effective in thoroughly keeping your hands clean. I have found this soap to be moisturizing especially in the winter time. I have had friends comment on how soft and non-dry their hands are from using this foaming soap. Once you get the hang of making this soap, you will be well on your way of saving money from creating your own!
